Tarique Rahman Pays Tribute to Mothers, Lauds Khaleda Zia's Contributions

DHAKA, May 11, 2025 — On the occasion of Mother's Day, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman extended his heartfelt tributes, wishes, and congratulations to all mothers around the world, specifically including his mother, former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia.

Tribute to Khaleda Zia

In his Facebook post, Tarique Rahman hailed Khaleda Zia as a "beacon of women's education," the "Mother of the Nation," and a "national leader." He highlighted her political life, stating she has dedicated herself to the country's democratic development and progressive society through:

  • Continuous struggle and sacrifice.

  • Relentless hard work and genuine love for the people.

He also credited her leadership with widely expanding women's education during the BNP's time in power, noting the initiatives she took to ensure girl students did not drop out of school.

The Sanctity of Motherhood

Tarique Rahman underscored the profound importance of mothers, calling Mother's Day an international day of respect for their contribution to society and family. He described 'Mother' as the "sweetest call in the world," containing the deepest affection and compassion.

He emphasized the mother's role as a "wonderful institution" and the key to a child's future, stressing that a mother's guidance awakens "excellence and true human nature," making the child's soul "pure, clear and holy."

Tarique Rahman concluded with the expectation that all mothers be able to raise their children as "worthy and good citizens" to ensure a brighter future for the nation.

About Mother's Day

Mother's Day is celebrated worldwide on the second Sunday of May. While the custom of honoring mothers has historical roots (such as the medieval Christian practice of returning home on the fourth Sunday of Lent), the modern observance originated in the United States.

The tradition began with Anna Maria Reeves Jarvis, who sought to commemorate her own mother's work by celebrating "Mother's Day" in 1907. Her efforts led to the U.S. Congress officially declaring the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day on May 8, 1914. Today, the day is celebrated in over a hundred countries, including Bangladesh.
