Khaleda Zia Not Stable Enough for Overseas Treatment: Mirza Fakhrul
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that although arrangements are in place to take ailing BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia abroad for advanced medical care, her current physical condition does not permit travel.
Speaking at a press conference on Saturday at the BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office, he said, “At this moment, she is not physically fit to be taken abroad. Once her condition stabilises, the possibility of overseas treatment will be reconsidered.”
Earlier, Mahdi Amin, adviser to BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman, said Khaleda Zia’s family is planning to take her to London once her health shows slight improvement. Preparations for an air ambulance are already underway. Tarique Rahman is Khaleda Zia’s son.
The 80-year-old former prime minister has long been suffering from multiple chronic conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, liver cirrhosis, and kidney complications. She was admitted to Evercare Hospital last Sunday with breathing difficulties and is currently being treated in the coronary care unit (CCU). A medical board comprising specialists from both Bangladesh and abroad is overseeing her care.
Fakhrul said the medical board—which includes experts from Johns Hopkins Hospital in the United States and clinics in London—met for nearly two and a half hours on Friday night and recommended sending her abroad for advanced treatment. However, due to her fragile condition, no final decision has been made, though preparations such as visa inquiries, destination options, and air ambulance arrangements are being completed.
He urged BNP leaders and supporters not to gather outside Evercare Hospital.
Responding to questions about why acting chairman Tarique Rahman is not returning to Bangladesh amid his mother’s illness, Fakhrul said, “I do not need to answer this. He has already clarified the matter on Facebook.” Pressed for further explanation, he added, “He is the acting chairman and my leader. His post should be taken as his statement.”
In his earlier Facebook post, Tarique Rahman noted that the decision regarding his return is not solely within his control, even during his mother’s critical condition.
