Attack on Prothom Alo, Daily Star: Suspects Identified, Legal Action Underway

Several individuals involved in the attacks, vandalism, and arson at the offices of Prothom Alo and The Daily Star have been identified, and steps are underway to arrest them and bring them to justice, Religious Affairs Adviser AFM Khalid Hossain said on Sunday.

Speaking to journalists at the Secretariat, the adviser said intelligence reports have provided photographs and identities of those who carried out the arson attacks. “We have already identified some of the perpetrators, and measures are being taken to arrest them and bring them under the law,” he said.

On Thursday night, Prothom Alo’s office in Dhaka was attacked, vandalised, looted, and set on fire, leaving the premises completely destroyed. The Daily Star office was also subjected to vandalism, arson, and looting the same night. The incidents have drawn widespread condemnation, with many describing them as a “dark day for the media” and a direct assault on independent journalism.

Responding to a question about the attack on Chhayanaut Bhaban, Khalid said such acts are unacceptable. “Setting fire to institutions or burning people alive can never be tolerated. These are heinous crimes, and we are determined to bring those responsible to justice,” he said.

The adviser also expressed deep sorrow over the killing of Dipu Chandra Das, a garment factory worker in Bhaluka, Mymensingh, who was reportedly beaten to death, hung from a tree, and set on fire. Describing the incident as extremely condemnable, he said the government would not allow anyone to take the law into their own hands.

Late Thursday night, the country’s leading Bangla daily Prothom Alo and the leading English daily The Daily Star were targeted in what authorities described as deliberate and organised attacks. Assailants carried out vandalism and looting at Prothom Alo’s Karwan Bazar office and The Daily Star’s office on Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue before setting both premises ablaze.
