Awami League barred from upcoming polls: Press secretary

Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam has said the Bangladesh Awami League, whose political activities are currently banned, will not be able to take part in the forthcoming national parliamentary elections.

He made the statement on Wednesday, 24 December, during a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital, held to brief the media on the outcomes of the interim government’s advisory council meeting.

Responding to a question about a letter reportedly sent to the chief adviser by five US lawmakers, Shafiqul Alam said he had not seen the letter and was not aware of the issue.

However, he reiterated that the government’s position on the Awami League is clear and unchanged. As the party’s activities have been proscribed and the Election Commission has excluded it as a political entity, the Awami League will not be eligible to contest the election.

In May this year, the interim government issued a notification banning all activities of the Bangladesh Awami League, including those of its affiliated, associate and fraternal organisations.

The notification stated that the ban would remain in effect until the completion of judicial proceedings at the International Crimes Tribunal.

At the time, the Public Security Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs said the decision was taken in accordance with the Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) Ordinance.
