Tarique Rahman Applies for Travel Pass to Return Home

Tarique Rahman Applies for Travel Pass to Return Home BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has applied for a travel pass to return to Bangladesh on 25 December , sources have confirmed. The application was submitted to the Bangladesh High Commission in London , according to a source in the United Kingdom, who confirmed the matter to Prothom Alo on Thursday evening. Living in exile in London for political reasons, Tarique Rahman has been without a valid Bangladeshi passport after it expired. Although he had the opportunity to renew his passport following the fall of the Awami League government during last year’s uprising, he did not do so. Under the current circumstances, he will therefore return to Bangladesh using a one-time travel pass , which allows a single entry into the country for Bangladeshi citizens without valid passports. The interim government has urged everyone to refrain from holding any gatherings or protests without permission

The interim government has urged everyone to refrain from holding any gatherings or protests without permission following the announcement of the election schedule. The decision was made at a meeting of the Ministry of Home Affairs on Tuesday afternoon under the instruction of the chief adviser, according to the chief adviser’s press wing.

The government warned that from the announcement of the schedule until the election, any illegal or unauthorized public gatherings or movements that cause public inconvenience will be strictly controlled. Anyone participating in such unlawful activities will be brought under the purview of the law.

The press wing added that the government’s primary objective is to ensure that the 13th national parliamentary election, scheduled for the first half of February, is free, fair, neutral, acceptable, and festive. The government is focusing on all necessary preparations to conduct a smooth election.

After the announcement of the schedule, the armed forces and all law enforcement agencies will work to maintain a proper electoral environment. Around 900,000 personnel will be deployed for law and order duties—the highest number in the country’s history. Additionally, 150,000 police officers have already been trained to support a fair election.

Regarding unauthorized gatherings and movements, Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Ret.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said that many people have legitimate grievances, and over the past year and a half, more than 2,000 demonstrations have been held to present these demands to the interim government. The government has responded to justified demands and has tried to reach resolutions through dialogue.

He added, “We are now in an election-focused period. Therefore, everyone is being urged to present any demands to the post-election government. We hope that during this time no one will create tension or disrupt the normal environment.”
