Controversial Remarks on Tamim: CWAB Demands Apology from BCB Director

The Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) has demanded a public apology from Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) director M Najmul Islam over controversial comments he made about former national team captain Tamim Iqbal.

CWAB raised the issue at a press conference held in Sylhet, strongly condemning Najmul’s remarks and calling for accountability. The controversy began after Tamim Iqbal spoke at an event on Thursday, where he shared his views on Bangladesh’s decision not to travel to India for the ICC T20 World Cup. Tamim noted that Bangladesh receives significant funding from the ICC and said all factors should be carefully considered before taking such a decision.

In response, BCB director and finance committee chairman M Najmul Islam posted a Facebook status describing Tamim as an “Indian agent,” triggering widespread backlash from cricketers and fans.

In a written statement, CWAB president Mohammad Mithun said such remarks from a senior board official were unacceptable. “When a responsible board director makes comments like this on a public platform, it raises serious concerns about the code of conduct expected from board officials. We have already sent a protest letter to the BCB president, demanding a public apology from the concerned director and that he be held accountable. We hope the BCB president will take prompt and appropriate action,” Mithun said.

Speaking at the press conference after the BPL match between Chattogram Royals and Rajshahi Warriors, Rajshahi Warriors captain and Bangladesh Test skipper Najmul Hossain also criticized the comments. “At the end of the day, a cricketer expects respect. Making such remarks about a player of Tamim’s stature, who has contributed so much to Bangladesh cricket, is deeply unfortunate,” he said.

He added that the incident was especially painful because the cricket board is meant to protect players. “The board is supposed to be our guardian. We expect support from our own people. From a cricketer’s perspective, this is completely unacceptable,” Najmul Hossain said.

Several current and former teammates of Tamim Iqbal have also voiced their support for him, with many cricketers expressing their views on social media.

During the CWAB press conference, Mithun was asked why players were not similarly vocal on Facebook when Mustafizur Rahman was dropped from the Indian Premier League a few days earlier. In response, Mithun said the issue had been handled through formal channels.

“We discussed the matter directly with Mustafizur and held meetings with the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations (FICA) about what could be done and what steps were possible. FICA assured us that, if Mustafizur wished, they would provide legal advisers,” Mithun said.

He added that FICA, which has legal advisers worldwide, could approach the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and seek possible compensation. However, the process did not move forward at Mustafizur’s request.

“Later, when we spoke to Mustafizur again, he told us, ‘Bhai, let it be for now. If I need anything, I’ll let you know.’ Since it was entirely his personal decision, we did not take the matter any further,” Mithun explained.
