13th JS Elections: Islami Andolan to Contest Independently in 268 Seats

Islami Andolan Bangladesh will contest the 13th Jatiya Sangsad elections independently in 268 constituencies, party leaders announced on Friday.

Senior joint secretary general and spokesperson Gazi Ataur Rahman said the party had initially submitted nomination papers in 270 constituencies, but nominations in two seats were later cancelled. As a result, Islami Andolan candidates are now actively campaigning in the remaining 268 constituencies.

He confirmed that none of the party’s candidates in these seats will withdraw their nomination papers. In the remaining 32 constituencies out of the total 300, Islami Andolan Bangladesh will extend support to candidates whose policies and ideals align with the party.

Gazi Ataur Rahman made the remarks at a press conference held at 3:30pm at the party’s central office in the capital’s Purana Paltan area. The press conference was organised to clarify Islami Andolan’s position on electoral seat-sharing.

After prolonged negotiations, lobbying, and a series of last-minute meetings, a coalition led by Jamaat-e-Islami reached an electoral seat-sharing agreement involving 10 parties. The candidate list of this alliance was announced late Thursday night at a press conference at the Diploma Engineers Institute in Dhaka. Despite comprising 10 parties, the coalition has been named the “11-party electoral alliance.”

Islami Andolan, which had been involved in the initiative from the beginning, failed to reach a final agreement with the alliance by late Thursday night. While the alliance left 47 seats vacant for Islami Andolan, it announced candidates for the remaining 253 seats. On Friday, Islami Andolan formally announced its own electoral strategy.
