Repetition of horrific incidents meant to put government in an awkward position: Mirza Fakhrul

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that the repeated occurrence of such horrific incidents is aimed solely at placing the government in an awkward position. Referring to the killing of Azizur Rahman, also known as Musabbir—former general secretary of Swechchhasebok Dal’s Dhaka city north unit—he alleged that there is a deliberate attempt to create instability in the country.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Mirza Fakhrul expressed deep grief, strong condemnation, protest and serious concern over the incident. Azizur Rahman Musabbir was shot dead around 8:30 pm on Wednesday in an alley behind Star Kabab in Tejturi Bazar, Tejgaon.

The BNP secretary general said that following the fall of what he described as the Awami League’s autocratic rule due to student–public movements, miscreants have once again become active in trying to destabilise the country and take advantage of chaos. The brutal killing of Swechchhasebok Dal leader Azizur Rahman Musabbir, he said, is a cruel manifestation of such activities.

He added that these incidents are being repeatedly carried out to embarrass the current caretaker government, warning that there is no alternative but to suppress the miscreants with a firm hand.

Mirza Fakhrul stressed that to restore democracy, protect the people’s right to vote, and ensure the safety of lives and property, people from all walks of life must unite regardless of political affiliation. Otherwise, he warned, the allies of what he termed “lurking Awami fascists” could re-emerge and endanger the very existence of the country.

He further said that such violence is seriously undermining law and order and creating widespread insecurity among ordinary citizens. Calling for unity, he urged everyone to firmly resist any attempt to destabilise the state.

In his condolence message, Mirza Fakhrul demanded the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those responsible for the murder. He also prayed for the eternal peace of Azizur Rahman Musabbir’s soul and expressed deep sympathy to his bereaved family.
