Trump says Iran has undergone ‘regime change’

US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that the US-Israel war had effectively brought about regime change in Iran, while also expressing confidence that a deal with Tehran was still possible.

“I think we’ll make a deal with them, pretty sure… but we’ve had regime change,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One, pointing to the number of Iranian leaders killed during the month-long conflict.

“We’re dealing with different people than anybody has dealt with before. It’s a completely different group of people. So I would consider that regime change,” he added.

Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of former supreme leader Ali Khamenei—who was killed in an airstrike at the start of the war on February 28—has been appointed as the country’s third supreme leader since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Since the conflict began with US-Israeli strikes on Iran, Tehran has effectively shut down the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route through which roughly 20 percent of the world’s oil and gas supplies pass.

The disruption has driven global oil prices sharply higher. However, Trump said relief may be forthcoming through concessions from Iran, including the imminent movement of several oil tankers through the key waterway.

“They gave us, I think, as a sign of respect, 20 large oil tankers going through the Hormuz Strait,” Trump said, adding that the shipments would begin “tomorrow morning and continue over the next couple of days.”
