Govt to make all-out efforts to bring back laundered money: PM

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today told the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) that the government will take all necessary steps to repatriate laundered money.

“The siphoned funds belong to the people. As an elected government, we have a responsibility to the country and its citizens. Therefore, it is a key duty of this government to bring back the laundered money and use it for the welfare of the nation and its people,” he said.

The premier made the remarks while responding to a supplementary question from treasury bench lawmaker Md Abul Kalam from Cumilla-9 constituency in the House, with Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, Bir Bikram, in the chair.

Replying to another supplementary question from opposition lawmaker Md Mujibur Rahman from Rajshahi-1 regarding the preparation of a list of money launderers, the Prime Minister said the relevant authorities are currently compiling a list of the accused individuals.

Criticising the arbitrariness of the previous government, Tarique Rahman, also chairman of the ruling BNP, said, “The current government is an elected one. In the past, we witnessed individuals in the previous administration acting at will, disregarding morality and values.”

“The present government respects the laws and legal framework of the country. We are committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that the accused are tried accordingly, so that no one is deprived of justice,” he added.

The Prime Minister said the law will take its own course and the government will act in accordance with existing legal provisions.

“The punishment of money launderers and fraudsters will be determined in line with the law,” the premier noted.
