China Urges Lasting Mideast Truce, Reopening of Shipping Lanes

China on Friday called for a lasting ceasefire in the Middle East and urged the reopening of key shipping routes “as soon as possible,” as the strategically important Strait of Hormuz remains effectively closed amid the ongoing conflict involving Iran.

Iran has largely restricted shipping through the vital waterway since fighting erupted with the United States and Israel on Feb. 28, while Washington has imposed a blockade on Iranian ports.

Tehran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz has unsettled global markets and given Iran considerable strategic leverage.

U.S. President Donald Trump discussed the Iran situation during a summit in Beijing with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

In an interview with Fox News after the first day of the summit, Trump said Xi assured him that China would not provide military assistance to Tehran.

“He said he’s not going to give military equipment... he said that strongly,” Trump told Fox News.

Trump added that Xi also expressed support for reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

“He’d like to see the Hormuz Strait open, and said, ‘if I can be of any help whatsoever, I would like to help,’” Trump said.

Asked whether the issue had been discussed during the summit, China’s Foreign Ministry said Friday that it hoped a durable ceasefire could be achieved “as soon as possible” to restore peace and stability in the Middle East.

“Shipping lanes should be reopened as soon as possible in response to calls from the international community,” the ministry said.

“There is no point in continuing this conflict, which should not have happened in the first place.”

In normal conditions, the Strait of Hormuz handles about one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas shipments, making it one of the world’s most critical maritime trade routes.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said Thursday that naval forces had allowed several Chinese vessels to pass through the strategic waterway overnight.
