Suvendu Adhikari Sworn In as West Bengal’s First BJP Chief Minister

Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in on Saturday as the first Chief Minister of West Bengal from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), marking a historic political shift in the state after decades of regional party dominance.

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with senior BJP leaders and Union ministers, including Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, JP Nadda and Dharmendra Pradhan.

Chief ministers from several BJP-ruled states also attended the ceremony, including Manik Saha, Himanta Biswa Sarma, Rekha Gupta and Pushkar Singh Dhami.

Adhikari was elected leader of the BJP Legislature Party following the party’s sweeping victory in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, ending the 15-year rule of the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC).

The BJP secured 207 seats in the state assembly, while the TMC was reduced to 80 seats in one of the most dramatic electoral shifts in West Bengal’s political history.

Adhikari also emerged victorious in two of the state’s most closely watched constituencies — Bhabanipur and Nandigram. According to figures released by the Election Commission of India, he defeated outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur by 15,105 votes after the final round of counting.

In Nandigram, Adhikari secured 127,301 votes at the end of the 19th and final counting round, further consolidating his political dominance in the state.

The 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections also recorded unprecedented voter participation. Polling in Phase II reached 91.66 percent, while Phase I recorded 93.19 percent turnout, taking the combined turnout to 92.47 percent — the highest since India’s independence.

The election outcome marks the end of Mamata Banerjee’s long-standing political dominance in West Bengal and ushers in a new chapter under BJP leadership.
