Army chief General Aziz Ahmed, who is accused of crimes against humanity.

A request has been made for an Interpol ‘red notice’ to facilitate the arrest of former army chief General Aziz Ahmed, who is accused of crimes against humanity.

The Office of the Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal sent the letter to the National Central Bureau (NCB) of Bangladesh Police, the central agency that coordinates between Interpol and member countries. Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam informed journalists of this on Tuesday.

The NCB, based at Bangladesh Police Headquarters, handles the exchange of information on international criminals and fugitives to aid in their capture.

The chief prosecutor stated that they had confirmed Aziz Ahmed’s presence in the United States and subsequently sent the request to the NCB on Monday for issuing the red notice. When asked if the NCB had forwarded the letter to Interpol, he replied that since they submitted it, it is expected the NCB will proceed accordingly.

Aziz Ahmed is among 41 suspects in a case regarding crimes against humanity linked to the killings during the Hefazat-e-Islam rally at Shapla Chattar, Motijheel, Dhaka, on 5 May 2013. Eleven suspects have been arrested, while Aziz remains at large.

The letter aims to enable Aziz’s arrest through Interpol’s red notice and his return to Bangladesh. The NCB will take the necessary steps for this process.

The prosecutor also mentioned that this letter concerns only Aziz Ahmed, as his location has been confirmed in the U.S. Similar requests will be sent for other suspects once their whereabouts are verified.
