Bangladesh Government Says It Is Prepared if Sheikh Hasina Returns

Prime Minister’s Adviser for Information and Broadcasting Zahed Ur Rahman has said the government is fully prepared should former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina return to Bangladesh from India.

Speaking at a press briefing at the Secretariat on Tuesday, Zahed Ur Rahman said Sheikh Hasina would be arrested in accordance with the law if she returns to the country.

“She has said she intends to come back. We are ready. We want her to return and face the legal process,” he told journalists.

The adviser said the government has repeatedly communicated its position to the Indian authorities through diplomatic channels. According to him, Bangladesh has requested Sheikh Hasina’s return and conveyed that she should refrain from making political statements while staying in India.

He also referred to discussions between Bangladeshi and Indian officials, saying the government's message has consistently been that Sheikh Hasina should be brought back to face legal proceedings.

Zahed Ur Rahman emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring due process.

“If she returns, she will be arrested as required by law. Following her arrest, she will have access to all legal rights guaranteed under the country's judicial system. The court will ultimately decide the outcome of the case, and the government will respect whatever verdict is delivered,” he said.

Responding to questions about media coverage of Sheikh Hasina’s planned address on Wednesday, the adviser reminded news organizations of previous government directives regarding the broadcast of her statements.

He warned that promoting or announcing the speech in advance could amount to contempt of court if it violates existing judicial directives.

“The media will once again be reminded to comply with the relevant legal instructions. Appropriate action may be taken against any violations,” he said.
