India should make use of that opportunity

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam emphasized the importance of dialogue between Bangladesh and India, saying that whenever the two countries’ leaders meet or hold bilateral talks, it creates a valuable opportunity to resolve many issues. She urged India to take advantage of this chance.

Speaking to journalists at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday afternoon, she was asked if a potential visit by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to India could help ease tensions in bilateral relations.

She replied, “Whenever the leaders of the two countries communicate, there is always an opportunity to address many problems. That opportunity exists and remains. India should make use of it.”

Referring to the sensitive issue of Sheikh Hasina’s sentencing related to the July uprising, Shama Obaed stated, “We have said before that when a convicted person speaks from Indian soil, it is not well received by the people of Bangladesh. The memories of the July events are still fresh, and the wounds have not healed. So, sensitivity is necessary. However, when the two countries’ prime ministers meet, many issues can be resolved. We hope India will keep this in mind.”

Regarding Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s possible visits to Japan and India, she said no dates have been finalized yet. “The visits will be scheduled at a time suitable for all parties. The prime minister is currently occupied with important national matters. Nothing has been confirmed about visits to India or other countries. These plans will be finalized through discussions with the respective governments.”
