Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Tarique Rahman Invited to India for Bilateral Visit and BRICS Summit, Says Randhir Jaiswal
Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has been invited to India for a bilateral visit and to attend the BRICS summit outreach session as Chairperson of BIMSTEC. This was confirmed by Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs, during a weekly media briefing on Tuesday.
The invitation follows a meeting on Monday between India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, and Prime Minister Rahman. Jaiswal stated that the discussions covered matters of mutual interest and confirmed the invitation for the bilateral visit and BRICS participation in Delhi.
The 18th BRICS summit is scheduled for September 12-13 in Delhi, where India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has invited Tarique Rahman to participate in the outreach session representing BIMSTEC. India first extended this invitation in February, shortly after Rahman took office, and diplomatic sources indicate ongoing efforts to facilitate his visit.
Separately, on August 5, fugitive former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina—convicted and sentenced to death for crimes against humanity—participated in a conversation with journalists via audio call at an event in New Delhi. Bangladesh strongly protested India’s decision to allow this interaction.
Recent high-level talks between India’s High Commissioner and Bangladesh officials also involved renewed requests from Bangladesh for the extradition of Sheikh Hasina and the murderers of Shaheed Sharif Osman Bin Hadi. Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman confirmed all relevant information about the case has been shared with India.
Asked about India’s stance on these extradition requests, Jaiswal said India’s position on Hasina’s extradition is clear and that all procedures are under thorough review. Regarding the murderers of Osman Hadi, he described the matter as legal and under investigation.
In response to questions about a recent two-day visit by India’s intelligence chief, Parag Jain, to Bangladesh and whether he met with the Prime Minister’s defense advisor Brigadier General (Retd.) AKM Shamsul Islam, Jaiswal said he had no information and suggested the relevant ministry could provide details.
