“We Will Ensure Gyanesh Kumar Resigns”: Abhijeet Dipke Ready to Go to Jail Ahead of Delhi Protest
NEW DELHI: Abhijeet Dipke, an activist with the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), has vowed to continue his campaign over the alleged deletion of voters’ names from electoral rolls, saying he is prepared to go to jail if necessary.
Dipke made the remarks while travelling from Mumbai to New Delhi ahead of the planned “Jantar Mantar 2.0” demonstration on Saturday. He demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations that millions of voters had been deprived of their voting rights.
Speaking to ANI, Dipke said threats of imprisonment would not deter him or other protesters from continuing their campaign.
“If you think you can stop us by threatening us with jail or intimidating us with the fear of imprisonment, you are mistaken. We are ready to go to jail. If you want to imprison us, go ahead and invoke the NSA, UAPA or any other law. We will continue fighting to save this country's democracy,” he said.
Dipke alleged that more than 13 crore votes had been deleted, claiming that the move had deprived people of their right to vote. He reiterated that the protesters would continue demanding Kumar's resignation.
“We will ensure Gyanesh Kumar resigns because more than 13 crore votes have been deleted and people are being stripped of their voting rights. We will keep fighting for this cause. We have to save India's democracy,” he added.
He also criticised the security restrictions imposed across the national capital, alleging that the measures were intended to protect the Chief Election Commissioner.
“I fail to understand how Narendra Modi can shut down the entire national capital just to shield one man, Gyanesh Kumar. Railway services have been halted, the metro has been shut down, roads have been blocked and internet services have been suspended,” Dipke said.
Security tightened ahead of Jantar Mantar demonstration
Security arrangements have been strengthened across New Delhi ahead of the planned protest. More than 35,000 Delhi Police and paramilitary personnel have reportedly been deployed amid heightened security measures.
The Union Home Secretary has also directed states and Union Territories to maintain law and order in view of the planned demonstration.
The protest, scheduled for October 10 at Jantar Mantar, is intended to demand accountability over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Despite the Delhi Police refusing permission for the demonstration, CJP has called for a large gathering.
In an Instagram post, the organisation announced its plan to return to Jantar Mantar to protest against Kumar.
“October 10. Jantar Mantar 2.0. We're coming together again to raise our voice against Gyanesh Kumar. Thousands of us are expected,” CJP said.
According to reports, Delhi Police have instructed their teams to detain anyone attempting to stage a protest, regardless of location.
Police have also directed Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) units not to issue weapons for deployment related to the demonstration. Letters detailing the allocation arrangements have been sent to the relevant directorates.
Unlike the arrangements made during the INDIA bloc protest, police teams have now been authorised to carry lathis and batons. Officers have also been instructed to avoid verbal confrontations with demonstrators amid concerns that videos could be recorded and circulated online in a way that portrays police personnel negatively.
Those detained are to be taken to six designated locations: Chhatrasal Stadium, Rajiv Gandhi Stadium, Yamuna Sports Complex, Surajmal Stadium, the Community Centre in Daulatpur and the Community Centre in Pandrawal.
