UN Chief Antonio Guterres Thanks Bangladesh, Calls For Rohingya Aid

DHAKA: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed his appreciation to Bangladesh’s interim government and its people for their warm hospitality as he arrived for a four-day visit, The Daily Star reported. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Guterres stated, “I thank Chief Adviser of the Government of Bangladesh, Muhammad Yunus, the interim government, and the people of Bangladesh for their warm welcome. As the country undergoes important reforms and transitions, you can count on the UN to help build a sustainable and equitable future for all.”

During his visit, Guterres is expected to call on the international community to enhance humanitarian aid for Rohingya refugees, who have endured immense hardship. His spokesperson reiterated this appeal in a media briefing earlier today, emphasizing the UN’s continued commitment to supporting the refugees and addressing their ongoing challenges.

Upon arriving in Bangladesh yesterday afternoon, Guterres met with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at the state guest house, Jamuna. Their discussions centered on Bangladesh’s reform efforts, humanitarian initiatives, and collaboration with the UN on pressing global and regional issues.

Earlier today, Guterres also met with Foreign Adviser Touhid Hossain and High Representative of the Chief Adviser on Rohingya and Priority Matters, Khalilur Rahman, at Hotel InterContinental. Their discussions further underscored the urgency of resolving the Rohingya crisis and mobilizing international support.

As part of his visit, Guterres and Yunus will travel to Cox’s Bazar to visit Rohingya refugee camps, where the Secretary-General will engage with displaced refugees from Myanmar and host communities providing them shelter. The delegation is also set to share iftar with the refugees, recognizing their resilience during the holy month of Ramadan.

On Saturday, Guterres will attend a photo exhibition at the UN office in Dhaka, meet with youth and civil society representatives, and participate in a joint press conference with Foreign Adviser Touhid Hossain. His visit will conclude with an iftar hosted by the Chief Adviser before he departs from Dhaka on March 16.
