Devastating CEPZ Factory Fire Brought Under Control After 17 Hours

The destructive fire that erupted at a factory inside the Chattogram Export Processing Zone (CEPZ) has finally been brought under control after a grueling 17 hours of intense effort.

The blaze, which originated on the eighth floor of the Adam Cap factory in CEPZ's Sector 1 around 2 PM on Thursday, was contained around 7:15 AM on Friday morning. It had quickly spread to two lower floors due to the presence of highly flammable materials, as the factory produced hospital equipment and towels.

Emergency Response and Damage Assessment

A massive response involved 25 firefighting units from multiple stations to tackle the inferno. Firefighters were also significantly assisted by personnel from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).

Despite the fire being under control, it was not yet fully extinguished, according to Md. Zakir, Duty Officer of the CEPZ Fire Service. The Deputy Assistant Director of the Chattogram Fire Service, Jasim Uddin, stated that the affected building has been declared a fire-risk structure. The full extent of the damage is still unknown.

Investigations Launched

Two separate committees have been formed to investigate the cause and circumstances of the massive fire:

  1. A five-member panel by the Fire Service, which has been given 15 days to submit its report.

  2. A second five-member committee by the CEPZ authorities, which is scheduled to submit its findings within five days.

This disaster follows closely on the heels of a separate tragic fire just days earlier in Mirpur, Dhaka, where 16 people died in a factory and warehouse blaze.
