Messi on 2026 World Cup: “I Would Like to Be There”

Lionel Messi has expressed his desire to represent Argentina in the 2026 World Cup but says he will decide based on how his body feels next year.

The 38-year-old Inter Miami forward, who led Argentina to World Cup glory in 2022, said he dreams of helping the “Albiceleste” defend their title in North America. However, he admitted that his participation will depend on his physical condition.

“It’s something extraordinary to be part of a World Cup, and I would love to be there,” Messi told NBC News in an interview aired Monday. “I’d like to be fit, to contribute, and to be an important part of the team if I’m there.”

Messi added, “I’ll evaluate things day by day when I start preseason next year with Inter Miami. I’ll see if I can really be at 100 percent, if I can be useful to the group and to the national team — and then I’ll make a decision.”

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, who turns 39 next June, said he still feels motivated by the prospect of competing again on football’s biggest stage.

“I’m really excited because it’s the World Cup,” he said. “Coming off winning the last one, having the chance to defend it on the field again would be spectacular. Playing for the national team, especially in major tournaments, is always a dream.”

Messi, who began his professional career with Barcelona in 2004, later joined Paris Saint-Germain in 2021 before moving to Major League Soccer in 2023.

Speaking about life in Miami, Messi said, “I like everything about living here. Barcelona was an extraordinary city where I grew up and experienced so many great moments, and we miss it a lot. But Miami allows us to live well, enjoy life, and be at peace. It lets the kids just be themselves and live day by day.”

So far, Messi has made 195 appearances for Argentina, scoring 114 goals for his country.
