Chief Adviser Seeks Commonwealth Support for Upcoming General Election

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today, Monday, requested the full support of the Commonwealth in conducting the upcoming general election, scheduled for the first half of February next year.

“We seek your assistance not only in our democratic transition but also in ensuring a smooth and credible election process,” said the Chief Adviser during a meeting with Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey at the Jamuna State Guest House. He expressed gratitude to the Secretary-General for her keen interest in Bangladesh’s forthcoming elections.

Professor Yunus reaffirmed the interim government’s commitment to holding a free, fair, credible, and festive election.

In response, the Secretary-General assured full Commonwealth support for both the election and the post-election transition. “The Commonwealth, comprising 56 countries including G7 and G20 members, has vast resources that Bangladesh can draw upon to strengthen mutual cooperation,” she said.

She further noted that she had met with a wide range of stakeholders, including the Chief Justice, Law Adviser, Foreign Affairs Adviser, and the Chief Election Commissioner, adding, “I am very hopeful about the country’s future.” She also confirmed that the Commonwealth is preparing to deploy several observer teams ahead of the elections.

The two leaders additionally discussed youth empowerment, entrepreneurship, the promotion of social businesses, and advancing the three-zero vision aimed at reducing unemployment, carbon emissions, and inequality.
