24 Dead as Bus Recovered from Padma River at Daulatdia Ghat
Rescuers have recovered 16 bodies from a passenger bus that plunged into the Padma River at Daulatdia Ghat in Goalanda Upazila, raising the death toll in the حادث to 24.
The operation, led by rescue vessel Hamza, lasted about six hours. Around 11:15 pm Wednesday, part of the submerged bus became visible, and by 11:30 pm, the rescue team used a crane to lift the bus out of the water.
Fire service officials confirmed that 16 bodies were recovered from inside the bus. Earlier, Md Hafizur Rahman, assistant commissioner and executive magistrate at the Rajbari Deputy Commissioner’s Office, had reported 14 recoveries around 12:50 am.
Among the victims are two children, 10 women, and four men, according to a late-night message from the fire service media cell. Two additional passengers were rescued earlier and taken to Goalanda Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared them dead.
The দুর্ঘটনা occurred around 5:15 pm when a Dhaka-bound bus lost control while waiting to board a ferry and fell into the river from a pontoon at Daulatdia Ghat. The bus had started from Kumarkhali in Kushtia with only six passengers but picked up more passenger along the route, bringing the মোট number of passengers to around 50, according to transport officials.
Rajbari Deputy Commissioner Sultana Akter said the government is taking the incident seriously. She confirmed that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman called to inquire about the situation and directed authorities to take immediate necessary measures and keep him updated.
Authorities are now forming a high-level investigation committee comprising representatives from the District administration, BIWTA, BIWTC, and police to determine the cause of the accident.
A local resident, Abdus Salam, narrowly escaped the tragedy. He had boarded the Souharda Paribahan bus but got off due to ferry delays. Recounting the incident, he said the bus suddenly moved toward the pontoon as the ferry docked and plunged straight into the river despite the driver’s efforts to regain control.
