54 Middle East–bound Flights from Dhaka Cancelled, Passengers Face Uncertainty
A total of 54 flights from Dhaka to various Middle Eastern destinations were cancelled from Saturday until 12:00 noon on Sunday.
Group Captain SM Ragib Samad, Executive Director of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, confirmed the matter to Prothom Alo on Sunday afternoon.
The cancellations were triggered by emerging security concerns, including the temporary closure of airspace in several Middle Eastern countries following US–Israeli attacks in Iran. The sudden suspension of flights has left many passengers in distress and uncertainty.
Airport officials said countries such as Bahrain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar temporarily shut down their airspace in response to the situation.
A visit to the airport showed anxious scenes among passengers scheduled to travel to the Middle East. Several travellers said they were worried because their visas have limited validity. Although authorities reportedly announced arrangements for accommodation and meals, many passengers claimed they had not received any assistance.
Md Sagar, who travelled from Cumilla to catch a flight to Oman, said he arrived in Dhaka on Friday for his journey, but his Saturday flight was cancelled.
“My visa is valid for only six more days. If I cannot travel within this time, I will lose the opportunity to go to Oman,” he said.
He also alleged that despite government assurances regarding accommodation and meals, he had not received any support.
Airport sources said flights to Europe and other regions are operating normally.
Two Cancelled Flights to Depart Today
Biman Bangladesh Airlines announced that the Dhaka–Madinah flight (BG-337), cancelled on Saturday, will depart today at 4:00 pm. The Dhaka–Jeddah flight (BG-335), also cancelled earlier, is scheduled to depart at 7:00 pm. Passengers have been advised to arrive at the airport on time.
Flights to Riyadh, Jeddah and Muscat to Resume
In a press release, US-Bangla Airlines said its flights to Riyadh and Jeddah in Saudi Arabia and Muscat in Oman will resume regular operations starting today. Passengers have been requested to arrive at the airport at least four hours before departure.
However, considering the overall situation in the Middle East, the airline has temporarily suspended flights to Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah in the UAE, as well as Doha, the capital of Qatar.
The airline said passengers will be contacted once flight operations to the UAE and Qatar return to normal.
