Govt Providing Tk 1.67bn Daily Fuel Subsidy: State Minister
State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Aninda Islam has said the government is spending Tk 1.67 billion (Tk 167 crore) per day in fuel subsidies to ease public hardship.
He made the statement on Friday around noon while speaking as the chief guest at a cheque distribution programme for underprivileged and distressed people in Jashore.
The state minister said the government remains committed to reducing people’s suffering and has kept fuel prices unchanged despite global instability. He warned that any increase in fuel prices would drive up electricity tariffs, transport fares, and food costs.
“Even under pressure from various quarters, the government has no plans to raise fuel prices,” he said, adding that the subsidy is aimed at preventing further hardship for citizens.
Aninda Islam noted that although fuel demand has surged, supply is sufficient for now. He said the country will be able to meet demand until April, despite public concerns.
He also pointed out that while nearly 80 countries have raised fuel prices, Bangladesh has refrained from doing so. However, demand has increased significantly in recent days.
According to him, the country’s daily diesel demand was previously around 12,000 tonnes, while petrol and octane demand stood at 1,200–1,400 tonnes. Ahead of Eid, diesel supply rose sharply to 24,000–25,000 tonnes per day. He added that steps are underway to build a 90-day fuel reserve in the future.
The event was organised by the Department of Social Services at the deputy commissioner’s office in Jashore. At the programme, the minister distributed one-time financial assistance cheques to 153 disadvantaged individuals, stressing that ensuring support for all citizens is the government’s responsibility.
He also said that social safety net programmes were first introduced in 1991 under former prime minister Khaleda Zia and were expanded by subsequent governments. However, he alleged that many deserving beneficiaries were deprived during the 15-year rule of the Awami League.
Elected from the Jashore-3 constituency as a BNP candidate, he said the government is working to ensure that only eligible individuals receive benefits, without influence from political or religious identity.
He added that several election pledges are being implemented, including family cards, allowances for religious leaders, and a farmers’ card set to be introduced on Pahela Baishakh.
The programme was chaired by Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Ashek Hasan, with a welcome speech delivered by Harun Or Rashid, deputy director of the Department of Social Services in Jashore. Local officials and leaders were also present.
