Accountable, Democratic Government Established Through Direct Votes: PM
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Monday said an accountable and democratic government has been stablished through the direct votes of the people after the country emerged from one and a half decades of authoritarian rule and exploitation.
“The people have regained their lost democratic political rights,” he said while inaugurating the e-bail bond system in seven new district, including Bogura, at a program held at the District and Sessions Judge Court premises on Friday morning.
During the event, the Prime Minister also inaugurated the newly constructed building of the Bogura District Bar Association.
Tarique Rahman, who also serves as Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), said the times demand now is to ensure that no autocratic force or subservient group can ever again deprive citizens of their rights or impose fascist rule.
“With that goal, the present government has taken appropriate steps to strengthen all constitutional institutions,” he added.
Among others present at the event were the Prime Minister’s wife Zubaida Rahman and Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman.
The Prime Minister stressed that without proper coordination among the legislative, executive, and judicial branches, citizens cannot fully enjoy democratic rights. He said establishing justice is essential for ensuring social balance, equality, and fundamental rights in a modern state.
Recalling the role of Ziaur Rahman, he said the late president had paved the way for judicial independence in Bangladesh—something that was later undermined through constitutional changes.
“During the fascist regime, the judiciary was turned into a partisan institution,” he said, adding that although the country was governed in the name of law, true justice was absent.
Referring to political changes in August 2024, he said the people were freed from “dark rule,” and the current government is committed to ensuring justice through the rule of law.
Tarique Rahman noted that if people believe firmly that courts are safe places for justice rather than harassment, incidents of mob violence would decline. “We want to establish the judiciary as a place of justice and trust,” he added.
Highlighting the new ‘e-bail bond’ system, he said the initiative is part of broader efforts to digitize judicial processes, reduce corruption, and ensure transparency and independence in the Judicial systems.
If implemented nationwide, the system would help eliminate delays and discrimination in obtaining bail, he said.
Describing justice as the ultimate goal, the BNP chairman said, “The rule of law is not the last word in a state—ensuring justice is the most important.”
He emphasized that upright judges are crucial for establishing justice and described the e-bail bond system as a significant step forward.
Under the new system, bail documents can be submitted online and delivered quickly to the concerned persons reducing harassment. Previously, completing bail documentation required passing through at least 13 stages involving lawyers, clerks, magistrates, police, and court staff.
“With the e-bail bond system, documents now reach the concerned person within a short time,” he said, adding that the government plans to bring all courts under this system.
From now on, the system has been start in courts across Bogura, Jhenaidah, Jashore, Magura, Rajshahi, Natore, and Kushtia.
As a result, harassment in post-bail release processes will decrease, while opportunities for interference by middlemen or forgery of bail documents will also be reduced, the Prime Minister said.
