Delhi promises easier visas within weeks, agrees to extradite Hadi’s suspected killers

India has assured that visa procedures for Bangladeshi nationals—particularly medical and business visas—will be simplified within the next few weeks.

The assurance came on Wednesday in Delhi during a meeting between India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman.

On the second day of his goodwill visit, Khalilur Rahman held over an hour of talks with Jaishankar at India’s Ministry of External Affairs. In addition to delegation-level discussions, the two ministers also met privately.

During the meeting, Jaishankar reiterated India’s interest in engaging constructively with Bangladesh’s new government and in further strengthening bilateral ties. Diplomatic sources said India is prioritising the early introduction of medical visas for Bangladeshi citizens.

Following the talks, Jaishankar said in a post on X that both countries agreed to remain in close contact.

According to a press release from India’s Ministry of External Affairs, both sides reviewed proposals to deepen cooperation under existing bilateral frameworks and expressed hope that the next formal meeting would take place soon. They also exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest.

Earlier, Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the foreign minister thanked India for arresting suspects involved in the killing of Shaheed Sharif Osman bin Hadi, convener of the Inquilab Moncho. Both countries agreed to return the arrested individuals to Bangladesh under the existing extradition treaty.

The meeting also included a request to extradite former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to Dhaka. They had taken refuge in Delhi after fleeing the country amid a mass uprising. This marks the first time such a request has been raised in talks in Delhi since Sheikh Hasina took shelter in India on August 5, 2024.

After the meeting, Jaishankar wrote on X: “Pleased to host FM Khalilur Rahman of Bangladesh and his delegation on Wednesday afternoon. We discussed strengthening our bilateral relationship in its various facets, exchanged views on regional and global developments, and agreed to remain in close touch.”

Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry said both sides emphasised advancing cooperation across multiple sectors and discussed key regional and international issues.

Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman said the newly elected BNP government, led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, would pursue a “Bangladesh First” foreign policy based on mutual trust, respect, and shared benefits.

Request for increased diesel and fertiliser supply

Later in the day, Khalilur Rahman met India’s Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri in Delhi. He thanked India for recent diesel supplies and requested an increase in both diesel and fertiliser exports to Bangladesh. Puri said the matter would be considered promptly and positively.

Both sides also agreed to continue regular consultations on key bilateral issues.

Earlier, the foreign ministers held a formal delegation-level meeting at Hyderabad House in New Delhi, while in the morning Khalilur Rahman attended a breakfast meeting with several Indian editors and senior journalists.
