12kg LPG cylinder price surges by Tk 387 in a single hike

The price of privately supplied liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) at the consumer level has risen sharply for April, with an increase of Tk 32.30 per kg. As a result, the cost of a widely used 12kg cylinder has jumped to Tk 1,728, up from Tk 1,341 last month—marking a steep rise of Tk 387 per cylinder.

The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) announced the revised prices on Thursday, which took effect from 6:00 pm the same day.

Earlier, at the start of February, the price of a 12kg cylinder was set at Tk 1,356. Following a reduction in import duty, it was adjusted on February 24, bringing the price down slightly to Tk 1,341.

According to BERC, LPG cylinders are available in various sizes, and the new rate has been fixed at Tk 144.04 per kg. Prices for different cylinder sizes will be determined based on this benchmark.

Although BERC revises LPG prices monthly, consumers often do not get cylinders at the government-set rates. The 12kg cylinder, the most commonly used for household purposes, is reportedly being sold at Tk 300 to Tk 400 higher than the official price in many areas.

Meanwhile, the price of a 12.5kg LPG cylinder supplied by state-owned companies remains unchanged at Tk 825. The price of LPG used as autogas has also increased, rising to Tk 79.77 per litre from Tk 61.83.

BERC has been regulating LPG prices since April 2021. The main components of LPG—propane and butane—are imported from abroad. Each month, Saudi energy giant Saudi Aramco sets benchmark prices for these components, known as the Saudi Contract Price (CP).

BERC determines local LPG prices based on this Saudi CP, along with the average exchange rate of the US dollar calculated from importers’ invoices.
