Teesta Master Plan Implementation Completed

Study on Teesta Master Plan Implementation Completed, PM Tells JS

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Wednesday informed the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) that the Bangladesh Water Development Board has completed a survey for implementing the Teesta Master Plan.

“The Bangladesh Water Development Board has already conducted the survey. The study report recommends carrying out dredging work over 110 kilometers under the Teesta Master Plan,” he said.

The Leader of the House made the statement while responding to a question from opposition lawmaker Md. Mazedur Rahman of the Gaibandha-1 constituency during the morning session, with Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikram, presiding.

The prime minister said the survey report also recommends dredging the section of the Teesta River within the Gaibandha-1 constituency.

He noted that the Teesta River is crucial to the livelihoods of people in the northern region of the country, but geographically it is a fast-flowing river.

During the monsoon season, heavy rainfall often triggers sudden floods and riverbank erosion in the area, he said. In contrast, during the dry season, water flow drops sharply and in many places nearly reaches zero.

Tarique Rahman added that large volumes of sediment carried during the rainy season lead to siltation, causing the river to split into multiple channels.

In this context, he said, the Bangladesh Water Development Board has completed the survey for implementing the Teesta Master Plan.

The prime minister also noted that the technical and financial aspects of the submitted feasibility study are currently being reviewed at various stages.

“Once the review is completed and the project is found technically viable, a timeline for implementation will be set,” he added.
