Zahed: Handover of Hasina, Quader Important for Improving Ties With India
Information and Broadcasting Affairs Adviser to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Zahed Ur Rahman, has said that India’s handover of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader and other wanted individuals to Bangladesh would be an important condition for improving relations between the two countries.
Speaking at a regular press briefing at the Secretariat on Tuesday, Zahed said the Bangladesh government expects India to hand over those facing legal proceedings in Bangladesh.
His remarks came after seven accused, including Obaidul Quader, were sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal in a case related to crimes against humanity committed during the July mass uprising.
Responding to a question about the government’s position on Quader and the other convicts, Zahed said Bangladesh wants Sheikh Hasina returned and therefore also expects the return of Quader and others.
He urged the Indian government to view the issue as an important condition for strengthening bilateral relations.
Zahed also said the matter was discussed during a recent meeting with Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi in Dhaka.
“I tried to convey our position on Sheikh Hasina and the others,” he said, adding that India should take the issue into consideration in maintaining practical engagement with Bangladesh.
Principal Information Officer of the Press Information Department Syed Abdal Ahmed was also present at the briefing.
