No ‘His Excellency’ or ‘Honourable’ Before President, Prime Minister Titles

The government has decided that honorific expressions such as “His Excellency” and “Honourable” will no longer be used before the titles of the President, Prime Minister, ministers, state ministers and deputy ministers in official communications and documents.

The Cabinet Division issued a circular on Wednesday notifying government offices of the decision.

According to the circular, the honorific terms, as well as any similar expressions, should not be written before the titles of the President, Prime Minister, ministers, state ministers and deputy ministers in official letters, documents, notes and summaries submitted to them.

The Cabinet Division has therefore instructed all concerned authorities to refrain from using “His Excellency,” “Honourable” or other honorific terms before the titles of these officeholders in official written communications.

The directive is intended to standardise the format and language used in government correspondence and official documents.
